How electricians can cut down their working hours
How electricians can cut down their working hours
As electricians, we think we know the benefits of running our own electrical business, don’t we? We can pick and choose the jobs or projects we take on, only work the hours we feel we need to, benefit from greater financial rewards, answer to no one, etc. But how many electricians end up working longer hours than they thought they would when they first thought about setting up their own business? The good news is, we at Business Transformer are here to support you and show you how electricians can cut down their working hours.
How electricians can cut down their working hours – Step one: realise the consequences of long days
You want your business to be a success, and for this to happen, you mistakenly believe that you have to put in extra hours to make sure it is. But few of us realise what the consequences on the rest of our lives are of working long days and weekends, until it is too late. Here are just a few reasons why you need to find out how electricians can cut down their working hours as soon as possible:
More hours do not necessarily equate to more work and profit
Working longer hours can lead to burn out and overwhelm. The result of this can be that you are working harder but not smarter. Your working day you may be chock-full of things to do, but you are not necessarily putting all your energies into the areas where you will get the most return.
Feeling tired?
There are many symptoms of tiredness. Some of these we can recognise ourselves, but others may be more apparent to those around us, like our friends or families. Sleepiness or weariness is an obvious one! Have you found that you need an extra spoon of coffee in a morning, drinking can after can of energy drinks, or you are yawning excessively for longer periods of time? If you are not getting enough sleep because you are working into the night, the net result is poor concentration levels and less focus on the job at hand. This is bad news for electricians, because of the nature of our work. Mistakes due to a lack of concentration could be catastrophic.
Irritability and short-temperedness are symptoms you may inflict on your nearest and dearest (unintentionally, of course!) There is also a greater risk of being ill because you will have less physical resistance to ailments like colds and flu. Having to work through an illness or take time off to recover leads to an ever-increasing pile of tasks waiting to be done. Sometimes, this can result in a cycle of fatigue and illness that is difficult to break out of.
Family/Social life
It is very difficult to experience any kind of family or social life if you are working really long hours. Moreover, you will be tired and touchy when you do spend time with others, so it will not be quality time. You need a life in addition to your business, not just for your own physical and mental health, but for the quality of your relationships with loved ones and their wellbeing too.
Health
Along with the reasons we have outlined above, increased working hours could damage your overall health. The more time you spend working in your electrical business, the less time you have for exercising and sleeping. There is also a chance that you may not be eating properly, because you are keeping irregular hours. All of these factors can increase your chance of illness and obesity. You need to find a good home/life/work balance to make sure you stay healthy. You need to realise that risking your health is a risk to your business too.
Safety risks
Do we really need to tell you about how all the above can affect safety risks in your profession? Lapses of concentration, lack of focus, tiredness, these can all play a part in the quality of your work, putting your reputation and your customers’ lives and properties at risk.

How electricians can cut down on their working hours – Step two: use systems to help you
The stress of working long hours to build your business can have the unfortunate result of making you fall out of love with being an electrician – the exact opposite of why you decided to set up your own business. A good place to start is to look at how much time you spend being an electrician, and how much time you spend doing everything else, as well as when you are doing it. For example, if you spend three hours every evening doing your accounts, general administration and producing quotes and invoices, you may benefit from project management software to take care of these mundane tasks and free up your evenings to spend with your family. Although there is, of course, a cost to your business it won’t be as expensive as you imagine - think about relaxing, spending time with your family and friends, playing that round of golf or going to the match! We think you’d agree those things are far more valuable and worth investing in.
